ROM: In Italien hat der Tod eines Fußballfans schwere Krawalle ausgelöst. Nach Behördenangaben griffen rund 200 Fans mehrere Polizeiwachen in Rom an. Sie schlugen Scheiben ein und setzten Autos in Brand. Dabei wurden mehrere Menschen verletzt. Vor dem Fußballstadion der Stadt kam es ebenfalls zu Ausschreitungen. Zuvor hatte es in mindestens vier Städten gewaltsame Proteste gegeben. Dies war eine Reaktion darauf, dass ein italienischer Polizist einen jungen Fan von Lazio Rom auf einem Autobahnrastplatz erschossen hatte. Der Beamte hatte versucht, eine Schlägerei rivalisierender Fußballfans zu beenden. Die Polizei sprach von einem "tragischen Irrtum" und kündigte eine Untersuchung an.
LJUBLJANA: Bei der Stichwahl um das Amt des Präsidenten in Slowenien hat sich der Sozialdemokrat Danilo Türk überraschend deutlich gegen seinen konservativen Gegner Lojze Peterle durchgesetzt. Wie die Wahlkommission in Ljubljana nach Auszählung fast aller Stimmen mitteilte, entfielen auf den 55-jährigen frühen Spitzendiplomaten der Vereinten Nationen mehr als 68 Prozent der Stimmen, der ehemalige Regierungschef Peterle erhielt fast 32 Prozent. Türk tritt am 23. Dezember sein neues Amt an. Gut eine Woche später übernimmt Slowenien die EU-Ratspräsidentschaft.
TIFLIS: Die Organisation für Sicherheit und Zusammenarbeit in Europa (OSZE) hat nochmals die sofortige Aufhebung des Notstandes in der Kaukasusrepublik Georgien gefordert. Außerdem müssten die Auflagen für die Medien des Landes zurückgenommen und Voraussetzungen für einen demokratischen Prozess geschaffen werden, sagte der OSZE-Sondergesandte Josep Borrell zum Abschluss eines zweitägigen Besuchs in der georgischen Hauptstadt Tiflis. Zugleich begrüßte er die Ankündigung von Präsident Michail Saakaschwili, Anfang Januar vorgezogene Präsidentenwahlen abhalten zu lassen...
